LLANELLI FESTIVAL

SELWYN SAMUEL CENTRE – BOWLS HALL

  1. Llanelli Historical Society is hosting the Llanelli Festival which is designed to promote the positive aspects of the town and celebrate the Society’s 10th anniversary. 2010 is also the 150th anniversary for the Army Cadets, the 20th anniversary for the Writers’ Circle and the 20th anniversary of the twinning of Llanelli and Agen – so there is a lot to celebrate.

  1. The event is being held in the Selwyn Samuel Centre Bowls Hall.

  1. Terry Griffiths has kindly agreed to be our celebrity for the event and will perform the opening ceremony at 11.00a.m.

  1. Royal Plate Prince CharlesFund raising: Prince Charles has sent his best wishes and hopes the event will be a success. He has also generously donated a 60th Birthday Commemorative Plate, No. 101 of only 1,000 produced, which will be raffled at 2.00 p.m. on the day. Tickets will available on the day at £1 each.

  1. Fund-raising: Major Evans of the Army Cadets has kindly agreed to donate a large teddy bear for the ‘Name the Teddy’ competition.

  1. Fund-raising: Other organisations have agreed to donate raffle prizes or make a donation to help raise funds.

  1. Money raised by raffles and donations for the event will fund expenses. Any profit from the fund-raising activities will be held by the Llanelli Historical Society for funding future events. For information contact the society’s treasurer John Williams MBE, telephone 01554 810677.

  1. The County Council is planning activities, including children’s amusements, outside the Selwyn Samuel Centre to compliment the Festival.   1. More than 70 organisations have booked floor space within the Selwyn Samuel Centre. The perimeter of the hall is fully booked and only a limited number of spaces in the central area are available.

  1. Sincere thanks are extended to everyone who has agreed to take part in this special event and to those who have agreed to sponsor the event and offered financial or practical assistance.

  1. Carmarthenshire County Council has generously printed posters in English and Welsh to promote the event.

  1. The Selwyn Samuel Centre has been booked for the event and sincere thanks are extended to Llanelli Town Council for agreeing to provide a grant to cover the cost of hiring the venue. The Town Mayor & Mayoress and Deputy Town Mayor & Mayoress will be in attendance.

  1. Llanelli Rural Council Chairman, Vice Chairman and their Consorts will be in attendance and will make a donation.

  1. The event has the full backing of the County, Town and Rural Councils.

  1. www.llanellitown.com llanellitown.com has kindly agreed to be the event’s media sponsors.

  1. It is proposed to organise events throughout the day to entertain visitors and participants and show the diverse and colourful culture the town has. A number of groups have said they are interested in performing on the day. There will be plenty to entertain participants and visitors on the day.

  1. Attendance for participants and visitors will be free thereby encouraging as many people as possible to attend the event.

  1. Local businesses have been approached regarding sponsorship and I await replies. To date the only responses I have had are from Marks & Spencer and NatWest Bank.

  1. It will not be possible to provide everyone with a table or chairs so every participant will be responsible for providing their own table, visual aids, display boards, chairs,

etc. Most groups have been allocated a space of 3m by 3m but if you require more space please let me know.

  1. The Army Cadets have agreed to act as marshals on the day, helping participants and visitors. Their help is greatly appreciated.

  1. Each participating group will be responsible for their own area, keeping tidy, clean etc., and removing any rubbish or waste at the end of the day.

  1. Arrangements have been made for the hall to be opened the evening before from 6.00 pm until 8.00 pm for displays and tables to be set up to avoid a crush on the day.

  1. The centre will open at 9.30 a.m. to allow setting up of tables etc.

  1. The Chairman and Treasurer of the Llanelli Historical Society will welcome everyone at 10.45 a.m.

  1. The speeches will start at 10. 45 when representatives of the County, Town and Rural Councils will be invited to say a few words.

  1. The official opening ceremony will be at 11.00 a.m. when Terry Griffiths will be asked to perform the ceremony and say a few words

  1. The event will finish between 4.00p.m. and 5.00 p.m. depending on the number of visitors.

  1. The Selwyn Samuel Caterers, S and J Catering, will be able to offer refreshments for participants and visitors throughout the day.
