Parc Howard has always been my local park and is a special place for me. As a child, I would take my brother Owain and his friends to play in the paddling pool and on the slope to Pentrepoeth Road. The recreation ground saw my (mercifully) few attempts at football. As a moody teenager I would go on sunny days in winter and sit with my friend Bethan around the Gorsedd stones looking down at Furnace and over to Stradey and feel that life might just about be bearable!

When I was at Ysgol Dewi Sant, I'd cross the park every afternoon. We had a poster of R. Williams Parry’s poem ‘Eifionydd’ in the hall at school. It describes walking along an avenue of trees to the sea. The last verse is:

O! mwyn yw cyrraedd canol
Y tawel gwmwd hwn
O'm dyffryn diwydiannol
A dull y byd a wn;
A rhodio'i heddwch wrthyf f'hun
Neu gydag enaid hoff cytûn

(How gentle to reach the centre/of this quiet place/ from my industrial valley/and my world-worn ways/and walk its peace alone/or with a dear soul in affinity).

We all need a place like that and we should all be able to share it. Every time I think of that poem, I see myself walking between the trees that run along the path between Parc Howard Avenue and Old Road.

Parc Howard is a beautiful place that makes our lives richer and is one of the few places that are not commercial where Llanelli people can meet and enjoy themselves. It is easy to run the town down but this is the time to protect what we have and to make sure the park is well-looked after and is in a condition where it can be used by everyone. I’m delighted that the Association has started that work and will do my best to support it.
