Fallen Tree
| A tree fell outside Parc Howard on Monday 03 August 2009. The Horse Chestnut close to the letter box by the turning to Parc Howard Avenue was about 27m (90ft) tall. Fortunately no one was hurt, however a motorist was slightly surprised. Apparently a large branch broke away from the tree falling in to Felinfoel Road, rapidly followed by the entire tree. Motorist Christian Davenport found himself enveloped by branches and narrowly missed being hit the main trunk. Click thumbnails to enlarge |

There was little wind that day with a high wind speed of 15mph from the SE, a 'Moderate Breeze' on the Beaufort Scale recorded at 10:25 hrs. Investigations are taking place to ascertain the cause of the problem and other trees are to be inspected. An interesting source of reference is the Forestry Commission website where there is much information about the Horse Chestnut Bleeding Canker problem throughout the UK. Let's hope it is not this.
